Pengunner Reloaded (update v0.5.0)

Update v0.5.0

  • Added the fifth character: Roxie, a dolphin made of stone. She's a tanky melee character with an emphasis on getting close and healing. The game is planned to have six characters total, so that means there's only one more to go!
  • Added a work-in-progress version of the fifth area. Roxie spawns here. The background and the music are done, but no unique enemies or bosses exist yet.
  • Reworked the game's main item drop system to be more accessible for new players. The game's UI now clearly shows the progress towards the next item drop. And when that drop happens, the game pauses, displaying information about the item. This allows players to make informed decisions about whether to take or skip an item without having to "collect" it during fast-paced gameplay. Hopefully this system makes item effect memorization easier and encourages people to strategize by skipping items. Hearts (and item drops from Snail Mail and Wrapped Casket) still spawn as collectable entities during gameplay, so Refrigerator Magnets still does something.
  • Added an app icon. It's the Large Asteroid!
  • Player hitboxes are even more forgiving than before. Nile and Gyro are affected the most by this.
  • Improved how enemies get knocked back when dealing contact damage to the player. Enemies knocked back from Gyro move horizontally instead of directionally.
  • Significantly lowered the bullet range of Bug enemies.
  • Also lowered the range of the bullets from Giant Asteroid fights past the first stage.
  • Teeth are now collected via distance, not hitbox, which makes collecting them while moving (especially as Nerve) significantly easier.
  • Teeth are now visually larger (while behaving as bullets). They're the same size as before otherwise.
  • Heavily improved the visuals of Astro's throw animation. Snowballs now spawn slightly higher to reflect this.
  • Aqua's body (not the bubble) is visually much larger now.
  • Nerve is slightly larger, too.
  • The squash & stretch of player movement is much more pronounced than before.
  • Slightly adjusted Astro's shot speed and range again (it's a tiny bit lower than before).
  • Reworded Nerve & Nile's summary of "double items" to "more items," which feels more accurate to the reality of playing as them.
  • Added dark outlines to the ticks in the UI, making them nicer to look at on busier/brighter backgrounds.
  • Removed UI clutter from boss fights. Boss health bars now display the name of the boss.
